What is the Difference Between Satin Paint and Eggshell Paint?

Not only are there different colors of paint to choose from, but there are also different types of finishes. Two of the most popular choices are satin paint and eggshell paint. So, what is the difference between the two, and which one is best for your upcoming paint project?

Satin Paint

Satin paint is best for kitchens and bathrooms because it is durable and easy to clean. This type of paint has a silky finish, but don’t think super shiny. It is more of a subtle reflection with a velvety glow. Satin paint also gives walls more depth, which is also why it is great for smaller rooms.

Because the paint is so durable, you can easily clean it. Just don’t scrub too hard! Keeping the walls clean is a breeze so it is a great type of paint for kitchens that see a lot of cooking action. Satin paint is also a low-cost option. But it can easily show application flaws such as paint roller or brush marks. Since this paint can be difficult to apply or retouch, leave it to the pros.

Eggshell Paint

Eggshell paint is great for bedrooms and hallways. The finish is smooth, but not as reflective as satin paint. But it still has a small luster to the finish. This type of paint is not as durable as other types, but it is safe for rooms that don’t see much traffic or brief traffic such as hallways.

However, it does only take a couple of coats to cover mistakes, making it easy to touch up. But the paint scuffs easily, so it is best to avoid using it in children’s rooms or kitchens. Eggshell paint should also only be used for interior walls. It doesn’t do well as exterior paint because it isn’t very durable.

Cleaning Your Painted Walls from Unwanted Marks

Crayons, markers, smudges, and dirt. Walls can get messy, and easily. Especially with kids around and in busy rooms like the kitchen and bathroom.

You might think it is an impossible task to clean walls effectively yet safely. Have no fear, you don’t have to repaint the whole wall to get it clean from those unwanted marks.

The Magic of a Magic Eraser

For light marks from crayons and pens, try the trusty old magic eraser. These erasers are great to clean almost anything, including walls! The foam-like material is gentle enough on painted walls while also working as an effective cleaning agent. It won’t remove any of the paint as it is delicate but works to remove scuff marks, pen marks, and crayons. Just wet the foam eraser so it is damp and start scrubbing!

Use a Baking Soda Soluble

For darker marks, you will need a little stronger cleaning agent. Start with just a tad bit of baking soda, like a dime size on a damp cloth and scrub. This is great for those stubborn small marks.

Need to handle a bigger job on white walls?

Combine baking soda and toothpaste! Add toothpaste and baking soda to a damp cloth. The baking soda works as the cleaning agent and the toothpaste helps whiten. This is ideal for those dirty white walls. For tougher marks, make a paste out of the toothpaste and baking soda. Then, use a small brush to gently scrub away unwanted marks.

Helpful Tips

To prevent those unwanted scuffs and marks, pick out a stain-resistant paint to paint your walls. Also, the type of paint can go a long way. The higher the sheen the better, so look for a satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint. Satin paints are great for hallways and kids’ rooms as marks are less likely to stick.

From picking out the right paint from the start to helping repair painted walls, East Valley Painters is there to help with all of your painting needs. East Valley Painters, serving Sun Lakes, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Chandler, and east valley cities for the past 30 years.

Tips to Prevent Your Home’s Paint From Fading

After taking the time and spending the money to paint your home, you must protect it, especially from fading! We see plenty of sunshine in Arizona, causing the paint to fade more quickly than usual. Luckily, we have some tips to help you keep your paint fresh!

Fading paint can make your home look unattractive and old. Looking to sell your home? Your home needs to be in tip-top shape from the inside and out. Yes, the paint will fade overtime, but you can slow the process down.

The Quality of Paint

The quality of paint you use on the inside and outside of your home always matters. If you are trying to save a few bucks, using cheap paint is not worth it. You will end up needing to repaint more often as it will fade much quicker. For the best results, always use the best paint. And also, always use the right type of paint. There are different paints for different surfaces, so make sure to consult with us first.

The Color of Paint

Yes, the color of the paint will impact how fast it will fade. Since we see an abundance of sunshine and at times harsh dust storms with strong winds, the exterior paint of homes in Arizona can easily be damaged.

However, using the right color of paint can be a quick fix. Stick to using browns and beiges for the exterior of your home. These colors fade slowly, where bright colors will fade much more quickly. Also, keep in mind that super dark colors absorb heat and can also fade faster, plus it is more noticeable. This is another reason to go with more neutral paint colors.

Using a Paint Company

When in doubt, always call on a painting company for help! At East Valley Painters, we can help you find the ideal color that will transform the entire look of your home.

We prep the surface correctly with the right primer and use only high-quality paint for an impeccable job. With the combination of the right paint, the right color, and the right technique, we can help your paint from fading.

The Different Paint Finishes to Choose From for Your Interior Paint

Choosing the right color of paint to use on the walls of the interior of your home is already stressful enough…you also have to consider the type of paint finish you are looking for.

Whether you are tackling the job yourself or hiring us to get the job done, you must always think about which paint finish is best for each room of your home.

Types of Paint Finishes

Let’s start by exploring the different types of finishes. If you are still unsure about what you want, you can always talk to us for our expert opinion.

Flat/matte Finish – flat and matte paint will absorb light instead of reflecting it. With no light reflection, it happens to be the paint with the most pigment, making it perfect for bedrooms.

Gloss or semi-gloss – gloss or semi-gloss paint reflects light, leaving a bright and shiny finish. This paint is smooth and easy to clean making it durable and great for places that have access to moisture or grease stains.

Satin – satin paint is extremely easy to clean. This paint leaves a velvety look, but it can be tricky since the finish makes it easy to see any and all painting flaws.

Eggshell – eggshell paint gives off a little luster, but basically no shine. This paint fits between satin and flat finish and is great for rooms that have walls that may be prone to imperfections

The Interior of Your Home

The type of finish to choose is determined by the different needs based on each room in your home.

Kitchen

For your kitchen, you will want a durable paint that is easy to clean. A high gloss or at least a semi-gloss finish is the ideal option.

Living room

The living room needs a paint that can withstand high traffic and is easy to clean. A good choice for a living room is a satin finish.

Dining room

The dining room is often one of the most elegant rooms in the home. An eggshell finish leaves a smooth and clean look to help complete the demeanor of the dining room.

 Bedroom

As we mentioned before, a flat/matte finish is perfect for bedrooms, plus it is a great paint finish to use to have fun with colors.

When is it the Right Time to Update the Interior Paint of Your Home

You might be thinking it is time to upgrade your walls with some fresh paint. There are two options…tackle the task yourself or hire the professionals at East Valley Painters to get the job done!

Either way…how do you really know it is time to update your home’s interior walls?

Time

Nothing lasts forever. In reality, you will most likely need to update the paint on your walls at least every 10 years. It really will depend on the room and how much traffic it gets. Some rooms are more popular than others such as the bathroom, whereas other rooms could get dirty easily, like the kitchen. Those rooms might need to be updated every 5 years.

The Paint

The biggest sign that you need to update your walls’ paint is the paint itself! Is the current paint job fading? This usually happens with darker colors and walls that are exposed to the sunlight. Or maybe there is noticeable wear and tear on your accent wall.

Low-quality paint also plays a factor. This type of paint will cause cracking or flaking, especially in extreme temperatures. Pretty much anytime your paint is damaged, it should be repaired or repainted as soon as possible.

Just Need a Change

Maybe you want to repaint your walls because you need a change! Updating your walls’ paint is a quick and easy way to remodel a room, even if it is just painting an accent wall.

If you decide to change the style and décor in your home, you will want to keep up with the look with a fresh coat of paint. There are times when you just want a new color on your walls.

Selling Your Home

Of course, if you are selling your home, you will most definitely want to update the walls in your home to make it more valuable. The benefits of doing this are well worth it. A freshly painted home is more presentable and will attract more people. Which means you will be able to sell your home quicker.

Hire a Professional

It isn’t always easy repainting the walls in your home. It takes time, the right supplies, high-quality paint, and more importantly…patience. Sometimes it is best to leave it up to the pros.

The Impacts Weather Can Have on Exterior Painting

Yes, weather and exterior painting go hand in hand. It can be difficult to do a painting job in harsh weather conditions. So, what is the relationship between weather and exterior painting?

Luckily, we see over 300 days of sunshine here in the valley of the sun. We usually have the most perfect weather to get the job done. Yes, Phoenix does see extreme heat in the summer and get some crazy thunderstorms (we will discuss this below), but East Valley Painters is still able to get the job done in these conditions.

Rain

We do see a few rainy days across the valley, but how does this affect exterior painting? Obviously, we can’t paint when it is raining out. But how long after do we need to wait after the storm has cleared? It all depends on the surface and the shape it is in. Do you have stucco and Is it In good shape? A light rain should only impact the job for the day if that. Get lots of rain and have wood? We will need to wait almost 3 full days. Remember, the surface needs to be dry to do the job. If not, the paint can bubble, blister, or peel. A moisture meter can be used to determine if the surface is dry enough.

Monsoon

In Phoenix, the summer months bring us monsoons. This isn’t just rain, but also wind and dust storms. This is unusual around the country, but very common in Phoenix. They usually pop-up in the late afternoon and evening, but does this still impact your paint job?

At East Valley Painters, we like to start early so we are usually done by the time the storms move in. However, we still watch the radar so that we have plenty of time to clean-up before the thunderstorm approaches.

When your home is it with a dust storm, we will always spray off any dust or dirt before resuming the job.

Extreme Heat

It is not uncommon to see triple digits for 100 days out of the year in Phoenix. It can get really hot and yes it is hard on the workers, but with years of experience working in the sun, they know how to deal. We try to adjust our hours to work earlier in the day to get the job done, when it is cooler and have plenty of sunlight. But does the heat have any impact on the paint?

Yes, high temperatures can stop the paint from binding together properly, causing peels and cracks. This is why we like to start the job before it reaches the highest temperature of the day. Luckily, we don’t have much humidity here in Phoenix to impact the drying process. The gentle breezes we see often helps speed up the drying process up.

Tips for Communicating with Your Professional Painter

A new year is a great time for a new look for your home. Maybe you have decided that 2020 is the year to hire a professional painter to upgrade the interior and exterior of your home. Just remember that working with the right painter is key and communicating properly is needed for the process to go smooth!

Be Open About Your Expectations

You always want to make sure that you relay everything you want and what you expect from your painter. This means sitting down with them ahead of time and planning out the project. From the colors to the timeline, make sure that you are both on the same page. Which also means how you two should communicate. Do you prefer through email, through text or by a phone call? Also, discuss with your painter how much you want to be involved. Do you want them to check-in with you on every decision or just once a week? Once you speak with your painter about this, you can set a plan for the painting project!

Discuss Your Budget

One of the most important details to discuss is your budget. This is another thing to be completely honest and open about with your painter. How much are you wanting to spend on your painting project? Do you have any room to go over? Always discuss all of the details about your budget right away so that your painter will know what they are dealing with. Make sure to ALWAYS get estimates ahead of time so you know what to expect as well and let your painter know to alert you of any changes.

Supplies and Techniques

Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions! You should always feel comfortable asking your painter what type of supplies they are going to use. This means the type of paint and what type of brushes. In addition, ask them what techniques they use. You want to know about the process they are using, especially if it is going to impact your daily life by having to have certain areas of your home closed off for some time. This is why it is so important to always choose the right painter, one that has plenty of experience, is easy to work with, is always reliable and will produce high-quality work.

Tips When Painting Your Walls Dark Colors

Are you wanting to update the paint in your home and want to go bold with dark colors? It might be a scary idea, but it can be done. Dark walls can give off a classy and elegant look, if done the right way!

Pay Attention to Details

Just like with any paint job, the details are important. Imperfections are going to show more when using dark colors, so the job must be impeccable. Ridges caused by drywall tape, nail holes and every other little bump is going to show up. For the best results, start with a smooth surface, meaning you need to texturize. We will give you hints on how to properly do this later on.

Fingerprints and scuff marks are going to show easily after you paint the walls as well. This is why painting a room a dark color can be a challenge, so choose a room that is less likely going to have fingerprints and scuff marks. A nice living room, home office or an adult bedroom is a good place to have dark walls because these rooms require less cleaning and maintenance. Keep in mind that dark walls are going to make a room look smaller, so paint rooms that you want to appear to be cozier and more intimate.

Choose the Right Color

Be smart when it comes to choosing the right color. It is hard work to paint your walls a dark color, so make sure you pick a color that you won’t get tired of and will like for a while. This is why you never want to go too extreme and become overwhelmed. Also, extremely dark colors can take away from the details in the room. You might want to experiment first and test out different colors until you find the ideal one. This doesn’t mean you have to paint the whole wall. Paint a small area and test out shades before making the big commitment.

Prepping Your Walls

Once you find the right room and the right color, it is time to prep the walls! This is where you are going to add texture to hide defects. You can either buy your own supplies to do this job yourself or you can hire a professional painting company like East Valley Painters to ensure the job is done right.

If you are going to do the job yourself, remember to texturize your walls and then prime them. Before starting this, make sure to tape off areas that you aren’t going to paint for a smooth finish. Remember to use more than one coat of paint. With dark colors, you may even need up to 3 coats, but a high quality paint will limit the amount of coats you need. Always make sure that you are spreading out the paint evenly and use a small paint brush to fill in the areas around the tape.

Helpful Tip: If you are going to be painting a room with a low ceiling, paint the trim the same colors to add depth and make the walls appear taller.
