Test before anyone scrapes

Ceilings sprayed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, and you cannot tell by looking at it. A lab test on a small sample is cheap and takes a few days. If it comes back positive, this stops being a painting job and becomes an abatement job for a licensed contractor.

Texture matching is where jobs go wrong

Smooth looks sharp but hides nothing, so it takes the most prep. And if you’re only doing one room, the new texture has to match the rooms next to it. Otherwise the transition will bother you every time you walk down the hall.

Primer is not optional

Fresh drywall mud absorbs paint unevenly. Without primer, you get a ceiling that looks fine at night and blotchy at two in the afternoon. That single step is the difference between a ceiling you stop noticing and one you keep noticing.

How long it takes

One room is usually a couple of days from start to finish. A whole house runs longer and is much easier to live through if you schedule it before you move in, or while you’re out of town.
