The Impact Lighting Can Have on Paint Colors

Did you know that the lighting in your home can affect the color of your paint? Before redoing the paint throughout your home, pay attention to the lighting to know how it will impact the look of the paint.

The paint colors you choose will not exactly match the samples you view in the store. This is because the lighting is going to be different in your home. In fact, the lighting in your home can change throughout the day thanks to natural light that comes in. It is best to talk with a professional painter about what you want and how the color of the paint will actually appear when considering natural light and artificial light.

Natural Light

Natural light will come through your windows and affect the appearance of your paint color, especially if it is in the position where it will see the sun often. A room that is facing north will bring in soft light and a warm look to the paint colors. This will lead to darker colors appearing more dark and lighter colors more mellow, adding a touch of blue from the light. A room that is facing south with receive more intense light leading dark colors to appear more bright. This will also cause white or light walls to wash out a room more. During the evening, a room that faces the west will bring in a warmth, adding orange and red hues to more deep colors. A room that faces in the east will see more green hues and the natural light will brighten the room.

It is a good idea to always test the colors in the room with actual natural light. You can do this by adding a sample of color to the wall in the morning and checking it throughout the day. This will give you an idea on how the color will look at each time of the day.

Artificial Light

Most artificial light comes in the form of either fluorescent, incandescent and halogen bulbs. The light in each room will change the look of the color of the paint. Fluorescent light will cool down the color of the pain and tends to go well with blue or green colors. Incandescent bulbs will add warmth to yellow and amber colors while brightening red and oranges. This lighting will dull out cool colors. Halogen bulbs are the closest to natural light and can cool down some colors and brighten white walls.

Always check samples of the paint color in the room that you are going to paint so you can see how it will look with the correct lighting. Keep in mind that an empty room will also affect this, so make sure there is some furniture in the room when doing this for a more realistic look.

Prolong the Longevity of Exterior Paint Jobs By Using Protective Coatings

Houses can get hit with extreme elements like high temperatures, strong winds and other harsh weather conditions. Especially in Arizona where we see plenty of sunshine and dust storms, the exterior paint of your home can easily get damaged and making it difficult to do constant paint touch-ups. Luckily, you can provide protection to your paint job with specialized protective coatings.

Variety of Options

Just like with any paint, you will have a variety of options to choose from when it comes to protective coatings like gloss, matte and semi-matte. These protective coatings are ideal for your roof and other spots that they see direct sunlight. There are even protective coatings that come with protective thermal properties, which is great for any home’s exterior. Ceramic coating is a durable, long-lasting option that helps your paint from chipping away and from fading. Since Arizona sees lots of sunshine and high winds, the weather can severely impact the exterior paint of your home. Homes that are painted with basic latex and acrylic paints usually need to be repaired every 3 to 7 years. When using exterior protective coatings, your home’s exterior paint can last over 10 years.

Quality of Protective Coatings

You get what you pay for and this couldn’t be any more true when it comes to paint, especially protective coatings. High quality paint and services can get expensive upfront, but you will be pleased with the finished product and it will actually save you money along with time in the end. The need of maintaining and reapplying poorly done exterior paint jobs will add up and using high-quality products and protective coatings is a great investment for your home.

Let the Experts Do It!

Leave it to the professionals at East Valley Painters to apply protective coatings. Our team of painters will ensure that the job is done right and has the experience applying not just exterior paint, but also exterior protective paint coatings. East Valley Painters has been proudly serving Sun Lakes, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Chandler, and east valley cities for the past 30 years.

The Benefits of Using Paint Over Wallpaper

Even though wallpaper might be making a comeback, there are many benefits to using paint to decorate your wall. The new year often brings new changes, especially to the interior of your home. When making these changes make sure that you are picking the right option for you. Remember, it can be easy to update your interior and add flare to your home with wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint.

Wallpaper? Paint? Or Both?

Of course you want to be creative when you are adding to your home’s walls and when it comes to choosing wallpaper or paint, location does matter. Are you looking to be daring? You will have more options with wallpaper. Fun prints and bold colors work well in rooms like bathrooms. Or you can even just do one wall with a special pattern, this is easily done with wallpaper. If you are looking for just a bold color on a wall, it might be better to use paint. Keep in mind, modern wallpaper is not always the most durable. Rooms with high humidity like kitchens and bathrooms with showers could cause damage easily to wallpaper, causing it to peel away. Also, a room with a lot of windows where sunshine comes through will fade the wallpaper. This is where paint is more beneficial as it will usually give you a lasting and flawless finish for many years.

Personalizing Your Wall

Adding a trendy wall to your room always adds a nice touch. Painting the wall a different color will give options with a number of different shades available. If you are looking for a fun design, wallpapers will add some fun patterns. You can even use wallpaper as a border with a painted wall. Wallpaper is more affordable, but in the long run, it can be easily damaged and can look really tacky if not done right. When it comes to paint though, you can mix the colors to get the right shade you are looking for. This gives you endless options, where you cannot get as customizable with wallpaper.

Things to Remember

Even though paint is more durable than wallpaper, it still isn’t always as durable as you may think. Paint can chip away, but luckily, it is easier to repair than wallpaper. When it comes to something that is waterproof, paint is the best option as high humidity will impact wallpaper. Both paint and wallpaper are easy to clean, so they are good if you have pets and kids since they can easily be wiped down so your walls are always looking their best. It depends on if you are doing it yourself or hiring a professional, but painting your wall can be pretty affordable. Of course, you are going to get what you pay for, so hiring a professional to get your paint job done will give you the best looking option. Wallpaper might be the cheapest option, but consider spending more for higher quality work. It depends on if you are looking to stick to a low budget or spend a little more for longer durability.

Painting Your Home & Preserving Paint During the Winter

Luckily, we don’t see harsh winters here in Arizona, especially in the valley of the sun. But you still want to be prepared for frozen temperatures if you plan on painting or storing your paint during the winter months, as there are times when the temperatures do dip below freezing overnight in the valley.

Painting During the Cold Months

We usually see pretty nice temperatures throughout the winter months, but you want to make sure you are painting your home during the spring and fall, when you are guaranteed nice temperatures, just in case a cold spell comes through. You can always hire our experienced painters at East Valley Painters to get the job done, but if you decide to do it yourself, make sure you know what you are doing. Some paints can be really thick when it is cold out, needing excessive thinning. Fortunately, there are special additives that can be added to your paint to help apply the thick paint easier in the colder temperatures. Keep in mind that latex paint can freeze easily, so it will need to be thawed. But if it goes through many cycles of being thawed, it could cause the paint to be lumpy, making the paint unusable.

Obviously, cold weather causes slower dry time. You might need to wait longer than usual to add multiple coats. Latex paint will take about 6 hours to dry in the cold weather, but some paints can take up to 48 hours. Make sure to pay attention to the ingredients and read the labels for more direction. Colder weather can also cause cracking or the paint to bubble. You can always apply extra coats to conceal, but remember, this will take you more time! There are special paints that are made for the cold weather along with special rollers and brushes to handle the thick paint. Check your local paint store for these options.

Storing Paint

After your paint job is done and you have leftover paint, you need to store it smartly so it doesn’t go to waste. It is wise not to store your paint in the garage as it could easily freeze when the temperatures dip below freezing overnight. Try to store in a closet at room temperature. Oil-based paint is usually not an issue as it usually doesn’t freeze easily, but it is still better to store in room temperature. You also don’t want to store your paint in damaged containers. Always store paints in a 100 percent vacuum sealed jar or container. You can always find these at your local paint store or hardware store if the original container gets damaged.

A Simple Guide to Eco-Friendly Paints

If you are thinking of updating the interior or exterior paint of your home, you should consider using eco-friendly paints. Eco-friendly paints are less toxic than regular paints and offer great splatter resistance. And surprisingly, these paints are still affordable.

What Does Eco-Friendly Mean?

Eco-friendly products are products that do not contain chemicals that are harmful to our environment. You can find eco-friendly options in many products like cleaners and even paint. If you are looking to protect the environment, only use paints that are NOT full of harmful chemicals. That way, you can breathe in clean air while also preserving the environment.

Top toxic paint ingredients to be aware of:

  • VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds – these chemicals evaporate at room temperature and could cause many health issues. This is why you want to look for low or zero VOC paint options. Health issues that can be caused by the paint going through the process of releasing gases, which could take a couple of weeks, include: nausea, dizziness, eye irritation, heart damage, lung damage, kidney damage and even cancer. Unfortunately, paints with VOC can contaminate indoor and outdoor areas. In fact, two-thirds of the VOC emissions recorded in California have been found to be caused by paint!
  • Pigments – usually the color of paint contains chemical pigments that are toxic. Try to look for all natural pigments in natural paint.
  • Fungicides & Biocides – toxic fungicides are used to prevent mildew from growing. Biocides are used to preserve the paint and extend the shelf live. These types of chemicals can linger in the air up to 5 years after application and can impact both indoor and outdoor areas. Like all paint, paints with these chemicals should be disposed of properly as these chemicals have the chance of getting into groundwater.

Things to look for:

First, always read the ingredients in the paint you are looking to purchase! You will be able to find many eco-friendly options at Lowe’s & Home Depot. Check the label and look for low or no VOC, low biocides and use only natural paints with natural pigments.

Tip:

Latex paint has low biocide & VOC levels, making it a lot safer of an option than oil-based paints, especially for interior use!

We proudly use Sherwin Williams and other fine paints that offer eco-friendly options. We also use only the best tools and techniques for all residential and commercial jobs. East Valley Painters, serving Sun Lakes, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Chandler, and east valley cities for the past 30 years.

When is it Time to Update the Paint on My Cabinets?

How do you know it is time to update your cabinets? From kitchen to bathroom to laundry room cabinets, you want them looking fresh. It might be time to evaluate your cabinets and update the paint. Luckily, the professional painters at East Valley Painters also specialize in making the paint on your cabinets shine again.

When it is time for a proper paint renovation of your cabinets?

– Older cabinets might still have vinyl, which was popular in the 1990s. The vinyl will start to peel, usually about 10 to 15 years after installation, as the adhesive starts to wear away. You will notice the vinyl coming up at the edges first. Hopefully, you will catch it before it gets too bad. When you notice this, it is the time to remove the vinyl and add a fresh coat of paint. Also, look for discolored vinyl as it turns yellow from sunlight and cooking.

– The overuse of cabinets is bound to happen, especially in the kitchen where cabinets are used the most. Sometimes cabinets lose their shine over time and often times cabinets will have chipped paint. This is a sign that it is time to refresh your cabinets paint.

– If your cabinets are not closing properly, it could be a sign of water damage, which is common, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. Most cabinets are made of wood and water damage can cause dark spots on the paint. Try to take care of it right away so mold doesn’t spread.

– Of course you want your kitchen to stand out as it is considered the center piece of many homes. If you have recently remodeled your kitchen and add stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and elegant fixtures like a new sink and faucet, then it might be time to also update your cabinets. Cabinets can often be overlooked when remodeling the kitchen. Try to connect the look of your cabinets with your new stylish kitchen.

What to Expect When Updating the Paint on Your Home’s Exterior

When updating the exterior paint of your home, it isn’t a spur of the moment project. Whether you are doing it yourself or hiring a residential painter, you will need to do some planning and preparation. But if you are doing it yourself, you have more work in store for you. Here are some tips on how to plan it and how long you can expect the process to take.

Plan!

The first thing to do is decide on the paint color! Are you looking to give your home a fresh coat of the same color? Or do you want something new? Look into the latest trends and talk with experts to help you decide on the right color. And of course, use only the highest quality paints and tools. Once you decide the color, you will be able to have your paint and supplies ready to start the process.

Prep!

Once you are done planning the colors and have things ready, it is time to prep your home. Clean away any pollen, dirt, loose paint and extra debris with a pressure washer. This job should only take a few hours, but it will take about 1-2 days to dry. If you have wood siding, this will take longer to dry, more like around 3 days. To be on the safe side, always plan for a full day of prepping and about 1-2 days for drying.

Paint!

Now, it is time to start adding that paint! If you apply the paint right and carefully, it should only take about 2 to 3 days to dry. Remember to start your project early in the morning when it is cooler out, especially if you are painting during the summer months. Also, always look at weather conditions to make sure that you are in the clear to avoid any unwanted painting disasters from mother nature. It might take an additional half of a day to remove any tape and clean up the supplies.

From start to finish, you are looking at about 5 to 7 days to complete the project. Luckily, high quality paint is expected to last about 8 years, especially in the state of Arizona. We may see some dust storms from time to time, but we do not usually see severe weather that damages the home’s exterior.
